Provenance information | The probabilities shown in this map are derived through a logistic regression model using seven risk factors and a training dataset of potential illegal waste locations. Following a literature review of international studies, 12 risk factors were identified as relevant in an Irish context, seven of which proved to be statistically significant. The risk factors used were distance to quarries, construction and demolition sites, industrial areas, artificial surfaces, wetland, transportation networks and water. Multiple different combinations of these risk factors were tested and the performance of the logistic regression model assessed. Ultimately, the best results were achieved when all seven risk factors were included. The map is considered under development and is released for review by authorities involved in waste crime so that the methodology used may be improved if necessary. Feedback from enforcement authorities on the map content and any possible refinement to the risk factors used is welcomed to analyticsstaff@epa.ie |
