Provenance information | The following datasets have been used in the creation of the feature class: - Margaritifera point records (Feature class: Margaritifera_records_IGTM75_2020_v16_) - Margaritifera habitat line file (Feature class: FPM_Habitat_Classification_IGTM75_2020_v11) - Margaritifera SAC catchments (Feature class: Margaritifera_Catchments_IGTM75_2020_v04) - EPA Water Framework Directive geodatabase (filename: EPA_WFD_v3.mdb) - feature classes containing river basins, river sub-basins and river segments. Most of the catchment boundaries used in this file follow EPA river sub-basin boundaries and were derived by first selecting sub-basins in which Margaritifera records or river stretches of Margaritifera habitat are located. In a second step any sub-basin within a river basin located upstream from a selected sub-basin was selected to include all areas with potential impacts on Margaritifera populations. For some areas that weren't covered by any river sub-basin or where the sub-basin file seemed wrong when compared to river and contour layers, the river basin boundaries were used to delineate catchments. Some sub-basins in the EPA geodatabase, mainly along some of the main channels, include vast stretches of river. In cases in which these sub-basins extend long distances downstream from any Margaritifera records, the sub-basins were cut around the lowest records. A topology check was done on the file to ensure that it is free from any overlaps and gaps. The resulting file contains 111 catchments, divided up into the three categories mentioned in the 'Description / Abstract' field above, and covering around one third of the country's land surface. Along with this feature class, an annotation feature class (filename: Margaritifera_sensitive_areas_2017_v08_labels) holding catchment labels for map display has been produced. Brief version history of dataset: Margaritifera_sensitive_areas_2011_draft_1: - Date: April 2011 - Includes the 27 management plan sub catchments, plus catchments with post 1970 live records. Catchments selected mainly from EPA WFD geodatabase (filename: EPA_WFD_v3.mdb). Margaritifera_sensitive_areas_2011_v01: - Date: June 2011 - Added all other catchments with live pearl mussel records before 1970. Topology checks for gaps and overlaps done. Annotation feature class with catchment labels set up. Margaritifera_sensitive_areas_2011_v02: - Date: October 2011 - deleted catchments for Liffey and Avoca, other catchments like Barrow and Suir checked with Aine (and discussed with Evelyn) as well, and left in. Map legend updated. Margaritifera_sensitive_areas_2011_v03: - Date: December 2011 - following the addition of point records and the creation of file <Margaritifera_records_2011_v05>, three areas have been extended to include records downstream from existing sensitive areas. Catchments concerned are River Easky, Co. Sligo; River Sheen, Co. Kerry; River Mealagh, Co. Cork Margaritifera_sensitive_areas_2012_v04: - Date: February 2012 - extended area for River Doonbeg to cover additional records Margaritifera_sensitive_areas_2013_v05: - Date: January/February 2013 - catchment for Deel extended - Munster Blackwater catchment slightly extended - Argideen added - part of catchment for Nore reassigned from ‘Catchments with pre-1970 live records’ to ‘Catchments of other extant populations’ - New category ‘presumed extinct’ set up for Barrow and Lower Nore catchments after consultation with Evelyn Moorkens Margaritifera_sensitive_areas_2014_v06 - Date: July 2014 - categories 'Catchments with pre-1970 live records' and 'Catchments with presumed extinct populations but further survey required' merged into new category 'Catchments with previous records of Margaritifera, but current status unknown' Margaritifera_sensitive_areas_2015_v07 - Date: October 2015 - Doonbeg catchment extended in northeast to reflect updated EPA Subbasin file (EPA file used: <WFD_RiverSubBasins.shp> with date stamp 04/06/2015) Margaritifera_sensitive_areas_2017_v08 - Major update of feature class, finalized in May 2017 - Three catchments - categorized as 'Catchments of other extant populations' - added: - Annageeragh (Co. Clare) - Creegh (Co. Clare) - Erne - Ominey (Co. Donegal) Margaritifera_sensitive_areas_2018_v09 - Date: September 2018 - Munster Blackwater main river catchment category changed from "Catchments of SAC populations listed in S.I. 296 of 2009" to "Catchments of other extant populations" (red to orange). Margaritifera_sensitive_areas_2020_v10 - Date: May/June 2020 - Erne - Annalee catchment category changed from "Catchments with previous records of Margaritifera, but current status unknown" to "Catchments of other extant populations" (yellow to orange) following recorded live mussels in catchment in 2019 - Munster Blackwater main river catchment category changed back from "Catchments of other extant populations" to "Catchments of SAC populations listed in S.I. 296 of 2009" (orange to red). |
