Provenance information | During the National Frog Survey of Ireland, A total of 405 water bodies were surveyed for spawn during spring 2011 in a total of 171 x 500m squares. Three water bodies were selected randomly from each square for breeding frog surveys. A total of three return visits were made to each selected water body to assess frog spawning activity. The surveys were largely carried out by NPWS Regional Staff. For detailed information on selection criteria for surveyed water bodies and the methods applied during the survey please see pages 18 ff. of the Irish Wildlife Manual No.58. In order to facilitate the mapping of the species' distribution on a 10km square level as provided in the Article 17 Conservation Assessment in 2013, all available frog records throughout Ireland for the period 2007-2011 were collated in addition to records collected in dedicated field surveys. The survey data was supplied to NPWS in MS Access .accdb format, and records from other sources were provided as shapefile. Subsequently records from these two data sources were uploaded into the NPWS Species database. Spot-checks of record locations against discovery series mapping were carried out prior to the upload, and Recorder 6 validation rules applied. Any positive records were then exported from the Species database as a polygon shapefile showing squares, with the side lengths of the squares corresponding to the precision in which the records were provided. Please note that due to data ownership restrictions, not all of the collated records are presented in the available shapefile. |
