The Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) Assessment Area is the geographic area management and reporting unit for Ireland's MSFD reporting. The Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) is European legislation, which aims to protect the marine environment. It requires the application of an ecosystem-based approach to the management of human activities, enabling a sustainable use of marine goods and services. The MSFD Assessment Area covers an area similar to the extent of the Irish Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The MSFD process started in 2012 with reporting periods expected every three years on progress to achieve Good Environmental Status (GES). MSFD provides descriptors and cumulative impacts that guide the reporting structure being implemented. MSFD is the European directive supporting marine environmental status monitoring. The MSFD is managed by the Department of Housing Planning and Local Government (DHPLG) with monitoring support by the Marine Institute (Ireland). The geographic boundary complete for reporting purposes.
